History Daytona International Speedway is synonymous with the world of auto racing. Although famous for hosting “The Great American Race”- the Daytona 500 – DIS boasts the most unique racing schedule of events in the world.
The track opened in 1959 with the running of the inaugural Daytona 500, which was won by the legendary Lee Petty in a photo finish over Johnny Beauchamp, that took officials three days to decide. With that historic event, Daytona established itself as one of the world’s premiere motorsports facilities.
While the Daytona 500 garners most of the attention, the enormous 480-acre motorsports complex boasts the most diverse schedule of racing on the globe -- earning it the title of "World Center of Racing."
In addition to the twice annual visits by the NASCAR Cup Series, Daytona hosts a multitude of events and sanctioning bodies on both the track’s 2.5-mile superspeedway and 3.56-mile infield road course. Stock cars, motorcycles, sports cars and go-karts are just a few of the various types of competition Daytona hosts every year.
In 2005, Daytona unveils its multi-million dollar infield renovation project that has given the track a brand new look. The infield now includes a wide range of amenities that provide the world’s most incredible, up-close-and-personal fan experience in motorsports. Interactive displays, a tribute area to the legends of the Speedway, roof-top spectator areas, a new Gatorade Victory Lane and a new signature infield structure, the Daytona 500 Club building all make their debut during this year’s edition of Speedweeks.
Fans can also visit DAYTONA 500 EXPERIENCE while here for Speedweeks. The 60,000 ft. interactive motorsports attraction on the grounds of the speedway features hundreds of multi-media attractions including the Pepsi IMAX Theater showing "NASCAR 3D: The IMAX Experience" and the award-winning "DAYTONA 500 Movie" on a four story high screen.
